How to Disable Ping Reply in XP

If Windows firewall is completely switched off in Windows XP, then your computer will reply for ping requests and allow file and printer sharing. Here, I’m assuming windows firewall is on with allowing exceptions as shown below.

Two Scenarios to disable ping reply in Windows XP.

1) Disable Ping reply with File and Printer sharing

2) Disable Ping reply with Enable File and Printer sharing

Disable Ping reply with Disable File and Printer sharing

If File and printer sharing is disabled already on your computer and now you want to disable Ping ICMP echo request, you just deselect the ‘Allow Incoming echo request’ in ICMP Settings as shown below.

To do this, Go to ‘Windows Firewall’ in control panel, then, ‘Advanced’ tab -> ‘Settings’ button in ICMP.

If file and printer sharing is enabled when firewall is on, then the above method of will not work, Because ‘Allow Incoming echo request’ will be grayed out in ICMP Settings as show below.

Disable Ping reply with Enable File and Printer sharing

Allow Incoming echo request’ option is disabled in windows XP firewall, because, exception given for File and Printer sharing in firewall rule. You can check it in, Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Exceptions Tab.

We can’t remove File and Printer Sharing exception to enable ‘Allow incoming echo request’ option, because we are going to disable the ping reply when file and printer sharing in enabled.
To complete this task,

Select File and printer and Sharing in exceptions without removing the tick, then press Edit button below.
Remove the tick front of TCP 445, as shown below.

Ping command use TCP 445 port for communicate through echo ICMP packets. Removing TCP 445 will not affect the File and Printer sharing in windows XP, only it will stop your XP computer to stop responding for ping ICMP echo requests. But, even after remove the TCP 445 from this list, you have to go to ICMP options and remove Allow incoming echo request tick if it’s selected. After remove TCP 445, ‘Allow incoming echo request‘ will be enabled and you can edit it.

These steps will disable ping reply when file and printer sharing is enable on windows XP.

How to stop ping reply and file and printer sharing in windows XP

By default when windows firewall is on with allow exception, file and printer sharing and ping reply will not be working in windows XP. But if you think any modifications have been done in your windows firewall settings, you can confirm the stop file and printer sharing and ping reply by checking following settings.

1) Windows firewall in not switched off in windows firewall in control panel.

2) Exception is not given to File and printer sharing in exceptions list under windows firewall, which means no ‘tick’ mark front of file and printer sharing.

3) No tick mark front of ‘Allow incoming echo requests’ in ICMP settings under windows firewall.

The above three checks will confirm that you have stopped the ping reply and file and printer sharing in your windows XP computer.

But still you can access shares from other network resources.

PageRank is an algorithim google invented that assesses the strength of a website. The algorithim evaluates a site on a scale of n/a to 10 with 0 being the lowest/weakest and 10 being the highest/strongest. We can check our site’s rank by using a checker pagerank tool.

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little
more in the way of content so people could connect with
it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2
images. Maybe you could space it out better?
